My gggg-grandfather was Joseph Spencer (1749-1811). The records of the Overseers of the poor in Church Hulme, Cheshire (now known as Holmes Chapel) show that on 17 Apr 1762, he began an apprenticeship for a period of 6 years with William Read of Bilston whose trade was a locksmith
The records also show that on 24 June 1770, Joseph Spencer, by now a bucklemaker, also took an apprentice from Church Hulme, named Randle Gandy for a period of 8 years.
Maybe this was a forebear of your Gandy family in Bilston.
