When the Air Ministry decide to produce the P82 Defiant they also looked at developing a turret fighter for the fleet. The P85 by Boulton Paul was considered but the chance to have both the Blackburn Skua fighter/dive bomber and the Blackburn Roc turret fighter on aircraft carriers (with a cross match of spares because they were intended to be almost identical) resulted in the Roc being ordered instead. As a consolation Boulton Paul were subcontracted to produce the Roc. This is an early batch of fuselages under construction in the Assembly Bay
