I am just gathering my thoughts and information together for the Fair at Olympia from next Friday to the Sunday. There is always the worry of 'Will people understand it,' will they like the concept,' etc etc.
The concept is so simple but I am beginning to understand why people don't always 'get it.' One of the reasons, I think, is because this is an archive and it is in the nature of an archive that it sits there until you want something. Looking at it from the search point of view it is one way traffic. You put in a search box the item you are looking for and it is either there or it isn't.
ShareHistory is a different sort of archive. It enables two-way traffic. Yes, you can search for an item in the same way that you can with any archive. But if you don't find what you are looking for then you can do more than simply move on. Add some of your history and in the description say what you are searching for. That way Google and other search engines will pick up your request and spread the message to thousands.
And if your search has a positive result and you find the right information don't just move on, add to the archive. Spread the word, tell your friends, history groups, company you work for, clubs you are a part of and let's make this an archive of everyone's history.
I am as proud of your ancestors as I am of mine. They all deserve their place in history and ShareHistory has been provided just for them.
I came to Who Do You Think You Are on Friday and did not see your stand but must have been given a postcard with your website address on, so found you after all, this morning, on the web. Having browsed around the different stands which offered to write your family history for you or join their society, I think your concept appeals to me most. I look forward to sharing my little snippets of history or perhaps larger pieces of study as we go along.
Best wishes and hope that the event has enabled many others to share their histories.
